At Cornerstone Medical, we provide Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exams to help commercial drivers meet federal safety standards and maintain their commercial driver’s license (CDL). Our certified medical examiners ensure that you are fit to drive and comply with the requirements set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Our physician, Dr. Darlington Hart, is NRCME (National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners) certified and is able to perform DOT exams for North Carolina drivers.
The cost of an exam is $90.00 and is not covered by health insurance and is nonrefundable regardless of the outcome of the exam (pass or fail).

- Operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) that weighs over 10,000 lbs.
- Transport hazardous materials requiring a placard.
- Drive a vehicle designed to carry more than 15 passengers.
- Operate a CMV for interstate commerce.

The exam involves a review of your answers to the health questionnaire part and a complete exam by the physician. You will be asked to give a urine sample.
If you wear contacts or wear glasses, bring them with you.
If you use hearing aids or use ambulatory aids, like a walking cane, we ask that you bring them with you.
If you have any pertinent medical records from other physicians that you think will assist the physician with his exam, please bring them with you.
If you have a federal waiver of any type (e.g., a vision exemption waiver), bring those as well.
We follow the guidelines issued by the FMCSA and NRCME and will only certify drivers who meet the set forth requirements based on these guidelines.
